New Caledonian Crow Tool Use

International Society for Behavioural Ecology

Jessica van der Wal is a PhD student at the University of St Andrews. Jessica studies animal behaviour, and is particularly interested in New Caledonian crows, known for their ability to make and use tools for foraging.

In order to support her talk a the ISBE 2016 conference and as part of a project for Hannah + Holly, I created a series of illustrations to help visually explain her current research questions.

Tool use is rare, and it is still a puzzle why this particular bird has evolved this behaviour, and other birds have not. Jessica is addressing this by looking at the ecological factors that might have facilitated the evolution of tool use.
